Complementary Intelligences
Execution vs interpretation inside complex systems.

Leadership teams are not built around identical strengths. They are built around complementary intelligences.
I’ve been re-reading Patrick O’Brian recently, and it’s made me think about how biotech organizations navigate uncertainty.
Aubrey specialized in execution within dynamic systems:
ships, crews, maneuvers, and combat.
Maturin specialized in interpretation of complex systems:
competitive intelligence, politics, science, and human behavior.
Biotech organizations navigating uncertainty should work the same way.
Some leaders excel at driving execution under changing operational conditions.
Others excel at interpreting scientific ambiguity, organizational dynamics, incentives, and weak signals emerging across the system.
The most resilient organizations have both.
